The pros and cons of Our Top Recommended books
Between Parent and Child
This Best selling classic gets a 9 out of 10 rating. The only reason is doesn't get a 10 because the information while timeless in many regards doesn't address the impacts of current and ever changing technology. It does speak to communication, connection and offers fabulous effective methods of building understanding between parents and children. Reading this will help parents better connect and get improved behavior from their children. If I didn't have a single parenting book this would be my first.
The Whole-Brain child
This book gets a 10 out of 10 and is a top three book for building your parenting library. It's a personal favorite of mine because it fits with the Cognition Tower framework we teach in Star Family Coaching. It takes difficult to understand science and simplifies it for anybody to understand. Lots of illustrations and common scenarios that give you just what to do when issues come up in the family. Plus you could get through this book in just a couple of nights, less than 175 pages. Quick easy and to the point! A must read!
Parent Effectiveness Training
Another timeless classic with over 4 million copies sold. This book may take time to get through over 350 pages. However most of the book is support stories of real life situations brought to training session of PET workshops. SO you get the techniques and methods that help build the bonds you and your child wants plus a ton of stories that cover just about every scenario a parent will deal with accept because it is dated some of what parent deal with today (social media) isn't covered. SO this book while a top three gets a 9 out of 10 rating.
Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child
This practical and comprehensive parenting book is the perfect companion to Dr Haim Ginott's Between Parent and Child book. Emotion Coaching is the focus which compliments what we teach at Star Family Coaching. Beginning with a wonderful explanation using reach studies of children that are parented with Emotion Coaching compared to those parented in traditional methods, Dr. Gottman quickly builds his case. Then it moves into a self test to establish your parenting style. Then 5 steps to become an Emotion Coach. Then there are strategies and a whole assortment of situations including a whole section on Divorce. Another 10 out of 10 book. Once you have those first three this is the one to get.
The 5 Love Languages of Children
Another 10 out of 10 rating! this book is part of a series put out by Chapman & Campbell that speak to our need to express and receive love. How humans do this and how we often don't see love being given simply because of how we understand love. This book should be required reading for all humans. The two Doctor's take the science of love and explain things that anybody can understand. It's aesthetically pleasing to read. Guaranteed many "Ah Ha" moments. Make sure to round out your parenting library with this must have book.
How to Talk so Kids will Listen...
If you are looking for a parenting book that operates like a workbook, to keep notes and journal your efforts, this is the right book. However it is more than that. The authors of this book are direct disciples of Haim Ginott! So this too is a great companion to Between Parent and Child. There are lots of places to take notes and plenty of illustrations with common scenarios parents face. Quoting from the Boston Globe, this book is "the parenting bible" If you can afford only one book this one is the most complete.
